5 Essentials for the Modern Work Woman

I am here to show you a whole new way of looking at 9-5 office wear! I’ve realized that a lot of women get in a work-wear-routine-rut where they keep wearing their matchy-matchy suit to work because it’s easy, or find themselves buying yet another black trouser pant because it goes with everything and that’s what they’ve always done!

I also recognize that certain jobs and some business women have a very set wardrobe that they must stick to, so in those cases, a black suiting blazer with a black pencil skirt, solid blouse and black heels are a perfectly appropriate attire for what they do! But for the days where they can dress just a bit outside of their normal box, for the women who’s work clothing standards are as descriptive as ‘casual-business attire’, or the young ladies who are fresh out of college, and have just landed an internship position with no idea what to wear that show that they want to be taken seriously as a professional, but also that you are a bright young women with taste, a fun personality, and have the right tools to get you noticed in the best ways!

Take a look at one complete outfit with my five essentials for the modern work women!

5 Things About the 5 Basics

1. This is a complete outfit, created with basics pieces that are extremely versatile, professional, and can be worn season-to-season.

2. These 5 pieces are trendy and fashionable, which show that you are up to date with the modern world

3. These are also classic pieces! This means that they that will carry you through your career for years to come, with a timeless look!

4. You can mix and match with all parts of this outfit, including a high waisted pencil skirt(trendy) with a button down tucked in(classic), or a fun detailed blazer(trendy) with boyfriend denim and pumps(classic) for casual Friday!

5. Adding some personality to your look should be an important and fun part of putting your outfit together every day. I always have a gold detail (bangle, earrings, sparkly nail polish, etc) in my outfits. You can rock a chunky belt with a shirt dress, carry an oversized tote, an initial monogram printed onto your button ups, or play up your lips with a bright color that completes your look!

Join me in re-inventing work wear to something you look forward to every day, something that is a great conversation piece or ice breaker topic with co workers! No more blah outfits! Add a pop of color, mix those prints, and break the rules. Let’s break the cycle of boring wardrobe past and let your clothing reflect the modern women that you are!

Since a well fitted jacket or blazer is often the big completer piece, choosing one with a fun pattern, interesting detail or pop of color is important, and adds character! I am a girly girl who loves a cute scallop detail! When wearing a button down or long sleeve blouse with a cropped blazer or 3/4 length sleeves, I like to fold and scrunch the sleeves up to just under the end of the jacket arm for a put together look.

#2 A Perfect Shirt (Button Down)

This is one of the best pieces in my wardrobe! I own a variety of button downs, and this has to be my favorite one! The tunic length is fitted, but comfortable, and on trend! I wear this alone, with a blazer, layered under a sweater, and half tucked into skirts! When purchasing your first button downs, you’ll want to look for a darted bust line, and fitted silhouette. If you plan on wearing it under sweaters and other tops, you’ll want to possibly size down, or at least make sure it is a little more fitted, otherwise it can create a bulge when layered. Wear a perfect shirt buttoned all the way up with a short statement necklace(on trend) from 9-5, then unbutton the first 2 and layer a long pendant necklace for after work!

#3 Ankle Pant

The thing I love most about ankle pants is that while they are crazy cute when paired with a pump, you can wear them with riding boots in the cold seasons, flats, sandals, & wedges, too! Straight leg ankle pants have taken retailers and the runway by storm this year and I am excited to see them popping up in a huge variety of colors, fits and styles. These little guys are a navy ponte* ankle pant with black leather detailing on the pockets. So cute, right? You know I love my navy and black combos! ❤

*Ponte pants are a combination of pants and leggings, made with a double-knit process. They're firmer than leggings, but more stretchy than jeans or trousers.

#4 Accessories (Carry-all Tote and versatile Pendant)

This little pendant was one of the first and very best buys from my first few months at Ann Taylor! I probably wear it at least 2x/week, and it goes with literally everything.

As I have mentioned before, Christian Siriano is my favorite designer for shoes & accessories. This tote is from his Payless line and it fits just about everything I could possibly need(or don’t need 😉 in it! (the sides zip in for a more compact look as well) My perfect carry-all bag has plenty compartments, sturdy handles, and of course is super stylish! ❤

#5 Perfect Pump(wear-with-everything-shoe)

As a girl who loves loves loves her high heels, I am way pumped(pun intended 😉 to have found a pair with an unpredictable color, that is comfy, pointy toed ❤ and that I can wear for long periods of time! These dark raisin pumps are a great example of the basic heel that should be in every girls closet! A well made heel with a neutral color is a great start to building your professional wardrobe, that will last you for years.
